Meta Tags: Titles, Keywords, Descriptions
In its simplest form, meta data is just data that quickly describes what is on a particular web page. The three most important tags are: titles, keywords and descriptions. What each tag does is self-explanatory. The meta data is in the source code at the top of the page and looks this this:
<meta name="keywords" content="some, keywords, here" /> = write about 20 keywords that best describes your web page
<meta name="description" content="short description here" /> = You would write a small paragraph describing your site’s content
<title>Title of the page</title> = You would write a short descriptive, unique page title
Every page in your site should have different meta data tailored to that page. Many websites builders have been lazy about meta data and use the same meta data throughout the site and, at the most, change the titles. This is not what you want.
If you have small amounts of traffic, and you have not done what is described above, you will notice the number of hits your website is getting increase once you implement meta tags. If you have large amounts of traffic, they are not as important. This is because Google and other search engines pay more attention to content and visitors than meta data. Since most new websites won't start out with large amounts of traffic, it is very beneficial to include meta data on all websites.
