FTP Access Explained
What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's the method used to transfer files from a computer to a web server.
What FTP program should I use?
If you are on a PC with Windows XP or Vista installed, Windows has built-in FTP capabilities.
Alternatively there are many programs on the web you can download for free, or for a small fee. Our suggestions include:
- FileZilla -Â Free, available for Windows, Mac, Linux
- Cyberduck - Free, Open Source, for Mac
- WS_FTP - For Windows, around $35.00
- Transmit - For Mac, around $30.00
What settings should I use in my FTP program?
These are the settings that should be used:
Host Name: your-domain-name.com
Username: username
Password: password
Your ftp client will then begin its session in the root directory, depending on the web server your website is stored in different locations. Look for these directories and files.
- If you see a file named index.html, default.html or something similar you are probably in the right place.
- Look for one of these directories if you do not see the above files:
- public_html
- httpdocs
- web
This is where you should upload your files for your website.
Where can I find my FTP details?
FTP details are sent out by e-mail 15 - 30 minutes after hosting accounts are ordered.
If you do not have or have not received these details, please contact your web host.
